OPENING WEEKEND - LIVE HORSE RACES
The 2008 Race for the Kids Gala went off without a hitch Friday, April 11, in the Champions Ballroom of Lone Star
Park at Grand Prairie. VIP patrons and sponsors enjoyed a reception prior to the 6:35 post time of the evening's first race and the arrival of the rest of the guest list.
Sponsored in part by Ben E. Keith, QuikTrip, CW33, CBS Radio, Clear Channel Outdoors and Heritage Auction Galleries, the Race for the Kids Gala featured a decadent dinner and dessert buffet, live and silent auctions full of items donated by local and national businesses and corporations, and the action-packed horse races of opening weekend at Lone Star Park.
Emcee Terri Chappell of CW33 News at Nine welcomed the near 170 guests to the 6 th annual event while special guests Drew Waters and Rolando Diaz entertained the crowd during the live auctions. Drew, a locally-based actor/international model, can be
seen in the BBC America episodic “Wired in Blood,” airing on Sundays this spring. Rolando, a renowned artist who works out of his Dallas studio, is also featured in an upcoming BBC America documentary, “Recapturing Cuba.” Drew and Rolando are proud to support Dallas Challenge in their mission “to help youth stay in school, off drugs and alcohol, and out of the criminal justice system,” through their continued support and involvement with the Race for the Kids Gala .
Highlights of the evening included Race 2, the “Dallas Challenge Race for the Kids;” Race 3, the “CW33 Race for the Community;” Race 4, the “QuikTrip Derby;” Race 5 the “Ben E. Keith: Who's Your Bud Challenge;” Race 6, the “Clear Channel Outdoors Reigns Race;” as well as a concert by country star Gary Allan following the last race of the evening.
All proceeds from the Race for the Kids Gala benefit Dallas-area youth by providing support to Dallas Challenge, allowing the nonprofit organization to continue providing prevention, intervention, education and outpatient treatment services to nearly 8,000 youth participants each year.
